Osgoode Law School Application

"Discuss how your educational experience has been affected as a result of systemic barriers and how this has influenced your access to education" (2000 characters)"

Excellent question! I suppose that the biggest systematic barrier to my education is Johnson street. It's systemic all right, planned by the man himself. If I'm hurrying to class and it's filled with cars that could cost me up to a minute... A MINUTE THAT COULD'VE BEEN SPENT LEARNING! I'm sorry. Christ, I'm really sorry I know how unprofessional it is to use all-caps in an application, but I love learning that much (hint hint). It's just like that movie. Y'know, the one with Julia Roberts? That guy really loves her and he does all this crazy stuff to get her attention. Well education is my Julia Roberts. See, that's another good thing about me: I can make metaphors which I hear is a skill high in demand among the lawyers. But I'm getting away from the original question here. So I guess what I'm saying as a white male from middle class parents I don't
technically have anything that would put up any barriers to education. But wait I have a bunch more characters to work with here (just like your opening class, eh! Ha ha, little joke there) so maybe I can throw some up. Let's see, I went to a school that was called "an inner city school" and an "urban jungle" by the biggest newspaper in Canada! That oughta buy me something right? In case you want to remedy the terrible shortage of Jewish lawyers, I'm a Jew! That's another barrier right? Oh oh! My parents are gay which makes me, according to some, "culturally queer". I don't know what that means exactly, but I do know it's probably hindering my access to education in this heteroculturonormative society! Though, evidentially, not enought to make me not know words like "heteroculturonormative". Wait there's no need to even go that far: one time an ad in my school said "Tell your mom and dad". Dad? Gosh, if that's not a barrier what is? Mentally retarded natives got nothing on me. But, in all seriousness, I have a the biggest reason, one that will for sure get me into your university. And that re

[Editor's Note, Admissions will accept only the first 2000 characters of an application]

As It Happens

We should all listen to more CBC Radye, specifically, As It Happens, weeknights from I guess 6 until 7:30 or 8? Last night they talked about a pelican eating a pidgeon whole! Also, they found this eery natural formation (actually a crater). You must click on the link above to see the crater. It's pretty incredible.
They interviewed an American GI who's getting a petition amongst active soldiers to bring back the treuuups. AND they issued the 6 word story contest in the tradition of the Hemingway one:
"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."
I don't have one yet, but I'm working on it...

Also, over the weekend I went to a bar in Burlington full of old pople. I also saw The Departed with WhiteBox. I thought it was Scorcese'sDOG since GoodfDOG. Monahan's script achiDOG consiDOGDOGDOGDOGDOGbut they sure are Irish!

Not dead . . . or am I?

First of all, yes I do still exist. Second of all, yes I do want to see the Decemberists on the 6th, but I only have $75 in my bank account. I'm working more yet I have less money - can someone explain that to me????

I'm insane busy with Excalibur... my roommate thinks I'm like this crazy hermit because I only come out of my room to go to work (and occationally school, whi happens to be where my work is - ha ha). Meh, I can only do so much about that.

Went to Waterloo this past weekend. It was a Canadian University Press conference. It was actually pretty good. The keynote was former Moxy Früvous member Jian Ghomeshi (notice that the blurb on the conference is wrong, and that Jian's belt buckle looks wierd). Did you know he went to York? Also, did you know he was once a YFS president!!?? AND, did you know that he that her changed the name of the student council to the YFS????? (don't ask me what it was originally). Did you also know that he very pokable hair?

A lot of the volunteers we took on the trip thought he was hot, or were in some way impressed by him. Last year, the same conference had George Stromboulopoulos as keynote. One girl (who wasn't part of CUP, thank God!) asked him how he got "so smart." The entire CUP audience groaned.

I wrote an article this week about the pagan roots of Halloween. It took me FOREEVER to write. I had serious writers block. I finally finished it (and laying out my section) at 3:30 am Monday morning (after starting work that day at 12:00ish). Considering how bad it was in the beginning, I think it's okay now... On a related note, when I went to the York Bookstore today to pick up some textbooks (yes, I still have course books that I have not yet bought) I checked out the magazines to see if Bitch magazine was there (I'm really getting into Bust, yay feminists?) and I saw this. I was intrigued by some of the quotes on the front page: "Help! Is my mother under a spell?", "The Magcal Mystical Phallus" and "Pagan guide to sex toys." Not your mother's broomstick, indeed.

Also, check out Captan Dan's Myspace. Like the Insane Clown Possy only pirates.

A Band with a Month

Greetings, fellow internauts!

Oh, the many things I've done in the past month!

Yes, I realize that I am the laziest blog poster ever, and I apologize. I blame my short attention span.

BUT I am posting now, and what news have I! Did you know that The Decemberists have a new album out? I didn't, but that didn't stop me from picking up a copy of "The Crane Wife" this week, and thoroughly enjoying it to boot. Available to lend upon request.

Speaking of The Decemberists, did you know who is playing the Kool Haus on November 6th? Why, it's none other than The Decemberists! I got a ticket, and all it cost me was the $20 that was burning a hole in my pocket. I invite any and all spendthrifts to join me.

Finally, did I mention that I'm typing this up on a Shiny New Computer?Well, relatively new. My dad's old backup computer at work is now my new home computer at home! To boot, it's about 5 times better than my Emac. For starters, it recognizes my iPod as something other than an external hard drive. Plus, it's not covered in filth and grime. Good news abounds!

Events and Happenstance

So I got a Queen's jacket for $20 from a housemate. But, if you can read the crest, it's from the faculty of Nursing Science. So I guess not only did I get a jacket for a couple of hundred less than the cost, but I also got a new backstory. I was in character the whole night at a party on friday:
Girl: So, uh, how many guys are there in your year?
Me: Three. [laughs] I know, I know and I've heard all the jokes about male nurses. But I'm going to be able to make a real difference in people's lives. Really help them on a personal level. Maybe it's stupid, but it's a really rewarding thing to be able to do.

On Saturday I was at a documentary party, where we watched a documentary about one of our professors. It's him and his brother following their path on one of their relatives who died at the Battle of the Somme. We drank everytime he came on screen. At one point he's changing into period costume and we found out he has a gigantic tattoo that covers the upper left part of his back (it's a Canadian Airborne one). After we went to a bar and got them to give a shout-out to Nelson who had died 201 years ago.

Today instead of doing work I remixed the Ok Go video and the shrimp on treadmill one to create something this:

A friend of mine who unsined bands with a group called BandAide PR has invited me to one of their events this thursday at the Silver Dollar (486 Spadina Ave at Spadina and College). The bands will be 'Friday Morning's Regret, '6ixty 8ights' and the 'Parkas'. Doors @ 9, cover $6. I'd like to go and support her because I missed the last event.

Who's got plans for Hal'o'Ween? Holy shit, that's approaching fast.
