NXNE, day 2 (Fri 10)

Pirate booty abound! I got a set list from EVERY BAND tonight, including Magneta Lane, who don't make set lists. Ashley cornered the drummer in the bathroom and made her make one for me! Ashley rocks.

The lowdown as follows:

9pm - Gladstone (we stayed there the whole night, and good thing, too, as Saka et al had a bitch of a time getting in) - Subsally
They were aight. The bass player and drummer could have started a hardcore or numetal band on the strength of their goatees alone. The lead guitar should have been in a funk band probably. They were aight. Like I said.

10pm - Uncut
"Hot!" said Ashley. I agree, actually, on the count of one of the guitar dudes. Loud, brash, cool rock n' roll. A really good set of raw kickin' out of jams.

11pm - Fembots
Folksy, a little. They did have an occasional hard edge to them, which was interesting. Solid songwriting, a bit stiff as performers, but only a little. I rather liked them.

12am - Magneta Lane
"Hot!" says Ben. I agree. Three hot girls rockin so hard. The bass player was a blur, said Sam-- true! The most danceable set. Most likely for me to buy an album from! Them. From them.

1am - the Deadly Snakes
Creepiest lookin' guys of the night! Horrendous, at times, what with the gap-teeth and skinny pastiness. Pretty gross. Awesome band though, I went fucking nuts over the last four or five songs. I need to buy their double album on LP in Sept, when it comes out-- rumour says the records will have 20 songs total, while the cd will have only 14.

Much briefer tonight. I'm tired. Fuck all y'all.

Tomorrow: Japanese punk rock.

NXNE, day 1 (Thurs 9)

The rundown:

8pm - Holy Joe's - Ben Sures
At's folksinger friend from a festival. A good show, he's a great guitarist. He might come to Box's Sat. night for a party! Mark j00 calendars.

10pm - Club 279 - For Mathematics? For the Mathematics? From the Mathematics? Something the mathematics.
High school hardcore. Who let these guys in?

11pm - Club 279 - Pony Up!
Fucking awesome. All girl rock/pop band! They were excellent, also, hot. I secured a setlist from the Druish lookin' one, and axed them to come to Box's on Saturday (how cool would that be!)
Unfortunately, they needed to leave for Montreal this morning. Apparently NXNE only pays for accommodation night-of-play. Fuck that shit. Fuck it up the ass.

~12.20? - Gypsy Hooch - Eternia followed by Mindbender
Local hip hop acts. Eternia had some solid beats, a good stage presence, and a good flow. I actually really enjoyed the end of her set (me an Box missed the first bit.) Mindbender was supposed to be really good. Um. I guess maybe in some manner he was? He was rapping off some classic Biggie beats, Thru the Wire (Kanye), and an old school Nas track. But he had the worst rapping voice ever. A cool guy, and some good lines, but it just wasn't doing it for me. We took off about 1.20 or so.

1.50 - The Drake - The High Dials
I came in and thought someone was playing banjo in a rock band, but all I saw was a guitarist, bassist, and drummer. HaHAha! Box, ever tall, sees friggen Ringo Starr circa Sgt. Pepper's playing friggen Sitar on the floor of the stage! The song goes for like 20 minutes. It was actually really good. I bought an album, it's actually a lot more pop-oriented than I thought it would be... it's a bit Oasis-y, in that it's a bit Beatles-y... but I'm enjoying it, actually. 10 bucks, good deal.

2.30 - The Drake again - 54-40!
YEAH so we found out 54-40 was playing at 2.30 in the morning! They did a really good set, and came back for an encore. 54-40 is maybe the perfect Can-rock outfit. Or, not perfect-- the most NORMAL, NORMATIVE, exactly-what-you'd-expect Can-rock outfit. You know, drummer, bassist, guitar+lead vox, better-guitar+backup vox. Solid songs that are fun to listen to but totally normal. Basically. It was good. Exactly what I expected. I stole a set list, and it had another set list on the back.

But there were all these awful drunk 35 year olds who can't have been to a concert since they were 20 or something. They were "dancing" like maniacs and kept running into Box and I, we eventually just stuck out or elbows and gave them the what-for every time they jostled us. We should have picked a fight with that awful Kenny G-lookin' asshole. We could have totally took him.

Tonight: Uncut, the Fembots, Magneta Lane, the Deadly Snakes. And a couple others. Starts at 8, at the Gladstone. Saka wants me to see the Junction at Lee's at 10. I might, but the Fembots might be playing then... I dunno if I can do that.

Come, all ye!

MORE IRON FOR THE MAIDEN, STAT!

Yesterday after Ben and I went for a run I went to my neighbourhood park to stretch. Obviously drawn by the pheramones some girls came over and started talking to me. They were quickly followed by their Portu-punk boyfriends who are apparently the jealous type. It's a good thing the community foot patrol cops showed up in time or else there'd be 3 fewer park bullies in the world.

I am an awsome blood giving hero! I went and donated for the first time. They ask all sorts of questions like "In the past 12 months have you had sex with any steroid using, heroin abusing rwandan postitutes, with cancer?" I had to think about that for a second. I was about to clobber the poor nurse when she came at with with the fucking sword they called a needle, she jumped when I growled at her. Due to my awesome pipes I told them to hook up another bag in the other arm. That place needs some new music, they were playing easy rock 104.3, I suggested that they switch to the Mighty Q 107. Frankly I think WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS and STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN would get peoples blood pumping better than Celine Dion and Tina Turner, they disagreed.

Oh yeah and as I was biking to the clinic I passed Future Bakery and saw the most punked out no-armed dwarf chick ever. She had a black and red faux hawk and multiple tats. And she rode a motorized rascal.

POST SCRIPT: Oh yeah I also got a sweet First Timer pin from the blood bank, now I'm only 99 behind my dad. Also as I was walking home down a side street off Bloor I spotted a bright yellow brand new lamborghini, it was tres chaud! I stopped to ogle and mentally grope. When the owner got in and started her up I almost wet myself.

Geekin' Ape

Dave got me back into Bash.org, which I haven't really read in like three years or something, whenever I stopped using irc. Hilarious stuff, though.

Apeny Apeyeness

Fuck yeah! Live from the Parry Sound Library....

The first week up here was this special conference for many, many Natural Heritage Educators in Ontario. Got paid to basically attend programs like the ones we run except these ones were run for us. Good stuff. We went out to "tha cleuuuub" one night. Geuuud times.

Now it's work, work, work. I kid. We mostly sit around and read and then go walk around the park on paid time when it suits us. It's great. We're quite the lil' NHE clique. All kinds of dreadful nature humour and puns and shit. The staffhouse is practically empty. (10 people for 32 beds). I'm taking up a double room now with my jonque in every corner. The weather's great up hyah, neuh rain hardly.

Oh! 'N it's my b-day on the 9th! Also, it's OfFiCiAL... I'll be back Sunday, Monday and then I gotta head back Tuesday night - so start planning! If you need my current phone number then call my house in TO and ask me ma or call ben and ask him.

Dint have enough time to catch up on Blog Life this time but I sure will at home. All the best.

Hey all. How goes the summer? Mine goes suckily. I have no car, no money, no job, and no friends nearby. Craptastic. BTW, I'm back home in Baltimore/Cobourg if you couldn't understand why my life sucks so much right now.

Anyway, I know I should have mentioned something a long time ago, but remember a while back when Leo/Ben/Sam came over to my/Claire's place for drinkies? Well somebody left some comics in a plastic bag there that night and I still have them. Maybe I'll eventually give them back, if I ever see whose-ever they belong to again.

Today's me brother's birthday. His girlfriend is down from Ottawa to surprise him. He is also trying to get his G2 (or is it G1?) today - this is his 4th try. I'm trying not to laugh too hard at him since it is his birthday afterall, and I think I'm supposed to be nice to him or something.

Going camping this weekend. Sorry Leo, it's not at Killbear (s/p?). I can't remember where it is, but it's with a bunch of people I don't know. I'm just using it as an excuse to get totally trashed and harass people on their family vaction. I can only be a careless teenager for three more months, then I have to start acting like an adult. I'm not too pleased about this fact.

BTW, be sure to check out the summer issues of Excalibur on their website (Don't remember the url right now, sorry). Tell me what you think of the Arts section and my articles.

Hope to see you all soon!

The dumbing down of society, Frontier 1

Have a look at this. I'd have to say this is one of the saddest reflections of our society today, that news stories (1 page ones!) need "key points" and "key quotes" so that people with absolutely no attention span can go back to watching MTV Newlyweds. What are we becoming?

Goin' ApeUpdates!

Firstoff, since my last post, I got new glasses! This means, of course, that I no longer miss my old glasses. It also means that, for most of my time now, I'll be wearing them, so I won't be as sexy, but I will look smarter. Which is good.

What else, I still don't have a job, but I ain't as full of hateful bile as I was before. Which is also good. Going in to submit myself for medical testing. Does that pass as a job these days?

That's pretty much it. My sister was made prom queen, but that doesn't involve me directly, so it doesn't get title billing. Still, cool.

That's it for now.

Christians are hilarious.

And this movie, The God Who Wasn't There, seems to take full advantage of that fact. I really want to see this now, it looks entertaining.

Speaking of theologia, Stigmata was on last night. Good movie if a bit campy. I believe it was based around the Gospel of Thomas, which the Catholic Church considers heretical despite the evidence of it predating the four Biblical gospels. it's an interesting read; certainly there are lots of parallels with the more well-known Gospels (all the seed analogies) but there are some other choice passages, like this one:
Jesus said, "Perhaps people think that I have come to casy peace upon the world. They do not know that I have come to cast conflicts upon the earth: fire, sword, war.

For there will be five in a house: there'll be three against two and two against three, father against son and son against father, and they will stand alone.

Well that sounds about right, don't you think?
